Immigration, Refugee and Asylum Task Team

When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him."  Matthew 2:13

Refugees, migrants, immigrants, and asylum seekers have existed since early humankind. People have been pushed by hunger, fear, and war and pulled by hope for a better future. This year, we have witnessed this truth as tens of thousands of children crossed the U.S. border and became a prime-time news story. Questions arose for our nation about how we would deal with these children. And now as the news has dwindled away, the newscasters moving on to more timely stories, lives continue to be held in the balance. This issue of people crossing into the U.S. is not a new issue, nor is it an issue that is going away. It is an issue that, as Christians living in our world, we must face.

The Immigration, Refugee and Asylum Task Team originally came together to deal with the issues and concerns surrounding the unaccompanied minors, especially those that were for a while slated to come to Massachusetts. As the plans for these children altered, so did the task force.  While it became apparent that large numbers of children were not coming to Massachusetts, the issues surrounding immigration and refugees were not dissipating. Thus, the call and focus of the task team simply altered.

The Immigration, Refugee and Asylum Task Team’s purpose is to educate our church community in Massachusetts about the issues related to immigration, to provide information and materials so that churches can educate their congregations and their communities, to look for ways to help those who are or have immigrated to this country, and to watch and affect policies that relate to immigration.  This is a newly formed task team which will continue to refine its mission and response based on what is called for given the current conditions.

We welcome you to peruse the information on this website. We encourage you to share any additional information that you think might help the task force serve the immigrant community better. We invite you to join us to help.

On Aug. 6, 2014, Southwest UCC Conference Minister John Dorhauer took time out of a family vacation to speak at the Church of the Pilgrimage in Plymouth on how to respond to refugees at the US Southern border. Here is a video of that talk:
